About the Author
Graham Greene (1904-1991), whose long life nearly spanned the length of the twentieth century, was one of its greatest novelists. Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of The Times of London. He began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book, Orient Express, in 1932. In 1935, he trekked across northern Liberia, his first experience in Africa, recounted in A Journey Without Maps (1936). He converted to Catholicism in 1926, an edifying decision, and reported on religious persecution in Mexico in 1938 in The Lawless Roads, which served as a background for his famous The Power and the Glory, one of several “Catholic” novels (Brighton Rock, The Heart of the Matter, The End of the Affair). During the war he worked for the British secret service in Sierra Leone; afterward, he began wide-ranging travels as a journalist, which were reflected in novels such as The Quiet American, Our Man in Havana, The Comedians, Travels with My Aunt, The Honorary Consul, The Human Factor, Monsignor Quixote, and The Captain and the Enemy. In addition to his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, two books of autobiography—A Sort of Life and Ways of Escape—two biographies, and four books for children. He also contributed hundreds of essays and film and book reviews to The Spectator and other journals, many of which appear in the late collection Reflections. Most of his novels have been filmed, including The Third Man, which the author first wrote as a film treatment. Graham Greene was named Companion of Honour and received the Order of Merit among numerous other awards.James Wood is a staff writer at The New Yorker, a visiting lecturer at Harvard, and the author of the national bestseller How Fiction Works and the novel The Book Against God. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Graham Greene is widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. The Heart of the Matter is a wonderful example of the depth of his creativity and understanding of the human condition. A deeply religious man, in the truest sense of the word, the main character, Major Scobie, is caught between moral righteousness and religious doctrine; specifically that of the Catholic church. This carefully crafted tale was written more than half a century ago, well before much of the hypocrisy of the Church had been exposed. Actually, the priest in this isolated West African province , is one of the most morally innocent characters in the book. It is the dogma of the church itself and the impact on its victims that is exposed so beautifully and subtly.The major, caught between his demanding wife and his young ward, is the true victim here. The church's regulations on thought and behavior, leaving nothing to the reason of the believer, is shown in all its emptiness. Major Scobie, the lifelong devout Catholic, is left with only the most hideous of choices in his quest for righteousness.This carefully crafted novel sneaks up on the reader unless he or she is forewarned. The story could be situated anywhere, but in the barest of civilizations, wonderfully detailed by the author, it is especially poignant. It is certainly one of the most moving and essential pieces of fiction of the last century.
Graham Greene's "The Heart of The Matter" is a poignant, exceptionally well written book that looks into the flawed, deeply religious beliefs, of a deputy Police Commissioner in the British Police force patrolling a West African colony during World War 2. The setting, like so many of Mr. Greene's novel, is exotic and the harsh climate of this African colony is a major and an enthralling character all itself.The book is highly descriptive and the author weaves it wonderfully into the narrative. It lists at a little over 250 pages, but it is more like a 350 page book. I strongly recommend this book, but I warn that this is not a book to be rushed through. It is a deep and penetrating look at religion and colonization and it leaves the reader pondering many important issues that are as relevant today as the day this wonderful novel was published.
Other reviewers have said that his writing is"exquisite" and "transcendent," which is true; here is a sample: "Over the sanitary inspector's shoulder Scobie could see the enormous range of the night. The fireflies signalled to and fro along the edge of the hill and the lamp of a patrol boat moving on the bay could be distinguished only by its steadiness." This bit is completely unnecessary to the narrative -- just thrown in there as a some local color. But it's arresting and beautiful. Greene has been described as a "film man," and he does make you SEE things. It has been said that "a fictional marrative should show and not tell," and Greene is brilliant in doing that. This is the first of his books that I've read, and I'm hooked. On the other hand, I found it difficult to believe in Scobie, his protagonist, who allows himself to be tormented by his nagging, neurotic, self-centered wife (as a high-level police officer, one would expect him to be tougher). Also, this is one of Greene's "Catholic" novels, and the last third of the book goes on at great length about Scobie's relationship with the Church and God. As a nonbeliever, I felt that Scobie would have been better served by a good therapist, were one available at his time and place..
The main character suffers from awful weather and isolation. His marriage is kaput. The writing is exquisite but you wonder how any Brits survive in their colonial outposts.

He wrote two kinds of books: first, what he called "entertainments", basically spy thrillers such as "The Third Man"; and "novels", deeply profound explorations of the human soul in conflict with itself--including, in this collection, his masterpiece, "The Power and the Glory".
A tremendous novel. Graham Greene is rapidly becoming my favourite novelist. His writing is transcendent. Mr. Greene paints masterful pictures, scenes, vignettes, in one's head. His scapes are better than anywhere else on planet Earth.
This story is about the morality of a man living a rather dull life. He is a Deputy police Commissioner in a British African colony. He leads a hum drum existence with little resistance to temptation. He professes to have high moral standards but easily falls. The story is slow moving with little excitement so it is rather dull and boring.
A haunting, beautifully written tale, set in early 20th-century British colonial West Africa, on the nature of love, friendship, duty, truth, and loss.
