Being an avid true crime fan, I've been soaking up as much as I can, no matter the format. Podcasts, books, documentaries, you name it. After listening to my usual line up of podcasts, including Serial, I came across Kevin Flynn and Rebecca Lavoie on their own podcast "Crime Writers On...Serial". I truly enjoy and look forward to their podcasts; the format is great, their voices are easy to listen to, and the structure of the topics being discussed is fluid and intriguing. After reading this book, I am certain I will be reading many more books from these two. Awesome job!
This was a very interesting story but about a fourth of the way through ,I decided not to read any further ,but a friend talked me into continuing. The reason being is that for some reason we were told the names of practically every relative the involved families ever had and many law enforcement people ,neighbors and many school friends etc. The cast of characters in the story was ridiculous ! Very long and drawn out for what could have been much shorter.
This was one of the most stunning True Crime books I have ever read. I was 31% into it when I wrote to one of the authors (Kevin Flynn) and commended him for his thorough research and reportage of a family saga with so many details and incredible background stories (layers and layers) it seemed too incredible to be true. "The Silence of a Small New England Town" is the key phrase here and you must read the entire book to find out why. It proves yet again how the ripple effects of one murder (and this is not even the main murder!) can spread out for years and destroy people and families permanently. This book made me shiver and proves yet again that we can never truly "know" people. (or know of what they are capable)
I'd never heard of this story until I saw the book on Amazon. Since then the ID channel has had an episode on one of their shows about it. The only thing I didn't like it were that a lot of the same facts were repeated a lot. The writer has a different style of writing which was ok, but not as engaging as other authors. All in all a good story.
This story takes place over the span of 40+ years. There are many threads tying the people (and their families) involved together. This book was of special interest to me as I have personally known some of these people. Pamela Mason was a high school friend that was murdered in 1964. In 1975 I moved to Hooksett, NH where I met Melanie and Denise Paquette.
Kevin Flynn has done it again! This is a really good book! Although there are a lot of people to keep straight, Flynn told this sad story in a very straight forward, easy to understand way. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I would recommend this book to any true crime buff!
I thought this book was well written. I'm not an avid reader, so a book has to be really good for me to get all the way through it quickly. This one was.Having grown up in the "Small New England Town" described in the book, and having been very close to members of the Windhurst family, surprisingly I only took issue with one thing. The portrayal on the cover of the book, and some advertising for it, make it appear as if every person that lived in the town of Hopkinton, or knew the Windhursts, had knowledge of or heard rumor about the murder, and was keeping their mouths shut about it. That sort of false impression created is irritating. Neither I nor my family knew about what Eric had done and were shocked the day he was arrested and news flew around town. After reading the book, you will see that it was actually only a rumor in Eric's high school class, the friends surrounding him, and immediate family members, not that of an entire town.Aside from that personal issue I have, the book itself was enjoyable. It has a lot of interesting details about the investigation. I think that the authors did a great job of telling the factual account of the story, while keeping you drawn in and wanting to read more. I was impressed by the attention to detail and the absence of the writers' personal opinions on the subject. It is in fact a True Crime account, an insider's look at what happened over the course of a 20 year investigation, not the personal attack on a town and family that I was anticipating. Very interesting read!
One of the best true crime books I have ever read. and I have read 100’s. Riveting and spell binding. Read. It in two days and it is a long story. Being from a small town in upstate New York, I can appreciate the description of where this story took place. Very well written.
