I purchased both the teachers edition and the students edition. If you are teaching Algebra this is the series you need. This is Algebra that will prepare the advanced student for college level mathematics. This is the most recommend series for high schoolers to grasp all the knowledge they need for this course. I originally purchased the workbooks that went along with the books, but you do not need them. Get the teachers book and the students, and then you have online access (even if you buy used) to the Pearson (PHSchool) site with worksheets and games for additional learning.

First off, I am a tutor to many Algebra 1 students, including some who take algebra with me for h.s. credit in lieu of taking it at school. I am very familiar w/myriad algebra texts. This book is a jazzier version of the 1994 publishing by Stanley Smith under the Addison Wesley label (owned by the same publishing house as Prentice Hall). I wrote in my review of the 1994 book that my only suggestion would be to take out Chapters 14 & 15 on probability and trig, as they don't really belong in an Alg 1 book. Coincidentally, this book has done exactly that. Hooray! The font, colors, typography, and imagery are more eye-catching than the bland 1994 book, and there are fewer problems of the purely "drill, drill" variety. They've replaced some of those problems with more challenging application problems toward the end of each assignment, but there are still sufficient problems for assigning many practice & drill problems. In fact, most of the problems are exactly the same as in the 1994 text.Overall, it's a nice improvement over the older text. They made it more visually and otherwise interesting *without* sacrificing content, as so many algebra texts do. This alone sets it apart from the majority of US-published algebra texts out there. (I tend to agree with a former teacher of mine when he said that, in his experience, the quality of a text is inversely proportional to the number of pretty pictures in it.) :-)I will continue to refer my students to algebra texts authored by Stanley Smith.

Been using this textbook for a few months now to review algebra from the perspective of an educated professional. The lessons are pretty good but there is one big problem; only a small sample of answers are provided for the practice problems and no answers are provided for the chapter tests. Learning math requires working practice problems and I do not understand how one is supposed to learn if he/she cannot check the answers to practice problems and assessments. Answers are provided for the chapter review bt in my experience this is not enough.I had considered giving this book 2 stars but I haven't been able to find a textbook that does a better job so I'm giving it 3 stars.

What's awesome about this workbook? The problems. The combination of problems. The way you have several skills on one worksheet - ends up saving paper and shows development of concepts. Some skills have very interesting types of problems that aren't in the Algebra textbook my school provides. This textbook remains my absolute favorite Algebra 1 resource. I'm not quite as fond of its Algebra 2 counterpart, but I use that workbook too. In my opinion, the only difficulty with this workbook is that it doesn't have an answer key. Of course anyone worth their Algebra salt can easily work the problems out, sometimes it's helpful when time is short to have a key handy. I thought the answers might be in the TE, but I don't see them in mine. Hmm.

Clearly written. Most of the definitions are clear; some need just a phrase or two to complete for understanding the concepts. For families or tutors (as I am) a copy at home, this text will be useful, not just for Algebra 1, but through elementary school as concepts are introduced and through high school math courses for review of definitions of vocabulary which teachers assume students know.

After having just finished Lial Hestwood's prealgebra book, the bar for a good math book had been raised pretty high. Even still, I was surprised by how poorly a book could present simple Algebra concepts. Two weeks into teaching out of this book, I was forced to get a different Algebra book. The explanatory pages are confusing and too brief. The explanations for working with negative numbers was close to useless. The problem sets are adequate. Only the odd answers are in the back of the book and the test page answers are not in the back at all, another negative.

First one came with the letters (FY) on it not very happy... but A.P. took care of it. Yes I still paid. The library wants 3x as much to replace. Kuddos

Standard book for simple Algebra. I recommend it for home schooling or just teaching or learning simple algebra.
