Horvath was put in a tough situation of being set up and watching a special person in his life die. Scot then set out to find out who did it and why. He then made sure they couldn't ever do it, or anything, again by paying for it with their lives. Horvath was as brutal as I have ever seen him. The book is well written and has twist that are both tactical and emotional in that the story uses Scots past present and future to challenge him. Horvath was like a trapped tiger in a corner and boy did he lash out.
In the forward, we are told the systems written about in the book are real. Some are operational now and some will soon be operational. When I was 80-100 pages in, I got on the PC and started doing searches. It was all there! The programs, the systems, weren't made up. There are a LOT of things I was unaware of,and I try to keep up with the news.As I read the book, and followed the links turned up by code-names and program names,I was watching Fox news and reading web news sites. After doing this for awhile,I started to feel like Brad Thor was a Nostradamus, who had predicted our 2013 news, back in 2012!After looking at things for a while, I also wondered why we needed a new NSA Data center in Utah, when we already have a huge NSA data center in San Antonio TX. Why so large, just to keep records? Data storage devices are getting smaller in size all the time.Warning:If you have been watching the political news closely this spring, and like to do research, and read news on the web.As you read Black List, you might find yourself feeling some very real paranoia, when you look at your PC or iPhone. At night when you want to sleep, you may start to wonder about those calls to your home number. Those hang-up calls that went to voice mail. No message. Obviously just a bunch of wrong-numbers.At 1AM, you might start asking yourself, why did I go with Verizon? Were any of those wrong-numbers from one of those Boston Bombers, or one of their friends, over in Cambridge?Anyways, I've read two other Brad Thor books, (The Last Patriot & State of the Union)but 'Black List' is the best so far. It's very much in phase with the bad news these days. These very scary days..PS:This book had a pretty big impact on me. I recently told some friends,"Black List, should come with a tin-foil hat..If you read it, while absorbing the daily news this past month, you just might start thinking about conspiracy theories."
This book really fell apart in the last few chapters and epilogue. Early in the book, there is a LOT of exposition regarding the efforts of the Federal Government with the assistance of industry to collect all communications and link those communications with individuals to create a dossier on every American. Brad Thor has clearly done a lot of research on the subject and chose this vehicle to communicate what he knows. I don’t really have a problem with that, provided the framework of the story upon which he hangs this information is interesting and compelling. The problem is that the story becomes really threadbare at the end.I concur with an earlier reviewer that the ending reads like it was hastily written and with a completely different level of detail from chapters earlier in the book. I have my suspicions on why Brad Thor would have wrapped up “The Black List†in such a slipshod fashion, but since I don’t know for sure, I will just say that the book reads like he was seriously distracted while writing the last few chapters. The set-piece ending was inferior to earlier scenes and resolution of plot threads was unsatisfactory. Authors and publishers of contemporary thillers ask readers to spend a lot of money on these books and invest a lot of time to read through to the climax. I have noticed a trend in the writings of popular thriller authors of late to quickly publish inferior works in an attempt to cash in on the goodwill their earlier efforts have engendered with their readers. Unfortunately, just as I have written off Lee Child and Robert Ferrigno and will no longer buy or read anything they write, endings like the one this book featured make it likely that Brad Thor is now in that category as well.
This thriller by Brad Thor places his protagonist, Scot Harvath, in the most serious situation. Someone has placed his name, as well as the names of the other members of the Carlton Group, on the Black List. The black List is a super secret list in which the nation's enemies have been marked for death for traitorous crimes against the United States.Scot finds himself out of contact with the other members of the Carlton group. Indeed all of them are dead due to the actions of the kill teams which are relentlessly hunting them down. The sole exception is the founder and director of the Carlton Group who finds himself in the same situation as Scot. Both men are alone and they face an unknown enemy who has a deadly plan to institute a virtual takeover of the United States. The book deals with these resourceful individuals and also Nicholas, also known as the Troll who uncovers some of the details of the plot orchestrated by the Advance Technology Solutions or ATS.ATS is a massive organization which has endeared itself to the NSA and many other government agencies and mastered the art of complete surveillance of much of the United States. Through the use of Department of Defense "wet' teams, ATs is eliminating its potential enemies (such as the Carlton Group) before undertaking its bold plan to seize control of the US.Mr. Thor has one a brilliant job of portraying the plot through the point of view of the key players, including the head of ATS. He has wielded together an intricate resolution to the plot. That interface is for the reader to find out.Five stars. Highly recommended.
