I passed the PMP exam on 09/16/16 thanks to Aileen Ellis's PMP Exam Simplified and her study plan. I have used several other sources in addition to Aileen's book, but it is Aileen's book that I worked through from beginning to end and it helped me more than any of the other books ( I tried Rita's book which seems very good but I found it a little onerous. I also tried the Head First book which is cute but it was a little squirrelly for me and I didn't finish it.) Additionally, I took a workshop provided by my PMI chapter several years ago and I took an online class. But it was Aileen's book and the structure that allowed me to understand the PMBOK Guide and attain my PMP. I own three PMBOK Guides because I was not able to finish the book before it expired and the new guide was published. This year I was intent on getting it done. Honestly, I had not heard of Aileen Ellis's book until I was searching on Amazon for a study guide. I received Aileen's book and was so excited because the format made the PMBOK Guide make sense to me and it was exactly what I needed. I read Aileen's book and used tabs for all the references to the PMBOK guide. I took all of the quizzes and practice exams. I made the flashcards. I highly recommend this study guide for people who are looking for a resource that will help to understand the PMBOK Guide and prepare them for the PMP Exam.
This book had a lot of potential to be an excellent review of the PMBOK. I really liked the way it was organized (by process group instead of knowledge area), because it makes more sense to think through how a project plays out in that order. HOWEVER, this book is FULL of mistakes and inconsistencies, and as far as I know, NO ERRATA HAS BEEN PUBLISHED. Just a few examples:Page 317: "Change requests - most monitoring and controlling processes have change requests as an output."Page 319: "Change requests - every monitoring and controlling process has change requests as an output."Which is it? most or every? (The correct statement is every process)Page 152: In the Contingency Reserve / Management Reserve comparison box at the top of the page, for Contingency Reserve it says:"The reserve may be:- a percentage of the estimated duration- a fixed time- developed using other methods"This is completely wrong, because it repeats what is said for Contingency Reserve for the TIME knowledge area. The correct statement should be:"The reserve may be:- a percentage of the estimated cost- a fixed cost- developed using other methods"Page 284: #5: It states ".... input to manage stakeholder expectations." It should be "... input to manage stakeholder engagement."I'm starting to think a lot of the errors are a result of this book being updated from PMBOK Rev 4 to PMBOK Rev 5, and a lot of the updates (like 10.4 Manage Stakeholder Expectations—changed to Section 13.3 Manage Stakeholders Engagement) were missed.Again, this wouldn't be that big of a problem if ERRATA was made available, but it's NOT.
After spending a year studying with IBM's proprietary materials/online classes and Rita Mulcahey's book, I still felt unprepared for the PMP exam.Don't get me wrong - these were great materials with LOTS of information, but the keyword here is LOTS. The PMP Certification exam is a textbook example of a 'mile wide and an inch deep' field of study and all of the information addressing every single aspect of it is overwhelming! After 5 WEEKS with THIS book and Aileen's online site, I not only passed the exam, but did quite well. Aileen's approach simplifies and streamlines your investment in study time. She focuses on areas that get you the most return on your investment AND utilizes even the wrong answers to advance your learning. You will not know everything there is to know about the PMP, but you WILL know enough to select the correct answers, or at least NOT select the wrong answers. I only had about a dozen calculations on the exam, but was able to confidently answer those correctly because I also supplemented my study with Aileen's mini books, "How to Get Every ____ Calculation Question Right on the PMP Exam". If you are feeling overwhelmed with the plethora of study advice out there, DO your sanity and your free time a favor - try Aileen's program!!
This book was my favorite study guide for the exam, for several reasons already cited in other reviews. Here are the features I love:1) The study tip to memorize Tools and Techniques for each process. SUPER helpful in understanding what goes on and how for each process. It was far more effective than trying to memorize inputs and outputs.Frankly I was just kind of skimming over the T&T descriptions in the PMBOK until this text stressed their importance.2) The topic presentation by process group instead of knowledge area. I found that much more intuitive and logical.3) The clear explanations and reinforcing questions concerning commonly confused terms or concepts (e.g., control quality vs. perform quality assurance).4) The repetition of key topics throughout the book, especially in the answer explanations. I did every question in the book, and the repetition made things stick without the pain of trying to memorize.5) The inclusion of the extra materials (outside of PMBOK). The exam content outline guided my study and research and helped me target what areas I really didn't understand.6) The descriptions of documents = excellent.I passed the test today on my first try. I took a 10 week class that met once a week, read PMBOK, read Rita and did all exercises, and read this book and did all exercises. I thought the test was difficult but fair, and the questions in this book are pretty comparable. Kindle version is perfect!Thank you for writing a book that promotes understanding!!My preparation included a 10 week class, reading the PMBOK, Rita and this book. I started in April and passed the test today.
