Your journey to calm, by Maggie OakesI found this book to be outstanding and so beneficial in a practical way for most people in life. A large percentage of us go through times of anxiety and panic, even for those who normally can handle all kinds of stress and difficulties. Sometimes even the strongest of us are facing panic attacks and don’t really know what’s happening.I’ve had a few intersections in my life where I woke up in the night with panic attacks, like when I was going to get married to my fiancé and knew it wasn’t right. I already gave her the ring, she announced it to her family, she already booked the Versace hotel in Australia for the wedding and here I am knowing that I can’t go through with it.I was walking down that lane planning on going through with it even though I knew it wasn’t right. I rationalized, that she was the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, and had so many wonderful traits about her, and I just can’t break her heart.I found myself in the exact place that the author talks about, to where it exploded and I woke up in a sweat and panic in the middle of the night, my heart racing.I wish I’d had this book and it’s instructions at that time, the only thing I did right was do some deep breathing and talked to myself.I believe that Maggie has a heart of gold and is really determined to help people with her medical knowledge and her practical experience with her own problems and dealing with her patients.I related to some of the descriptions of social anxiety, meeting a group of people I didn’t know, that were highly successful people, and I felt like I was way underneath them. Again if I’d had this book at that time I could’ve handled the situation much better.I believe the chapters dealing with healthy eating and sleep hygiene have been some of the things that help me the most.I would go to bed with devices all around me, lights blinking, some things charging and hearing bells go off when people were messaging me. I can laugh about it now thinking about how distractive this was to good sound healthy sleep.I believe the author is 100% correct, and developing the right atmosphere for good sleep hygiene. It makes such a difference.I have personally benefited on her speaking about affirmations and loving yourself. I didn’t realize it, but when I lost a fortune in the 2008 financial crash, I couldn’t forgive myself, I should’ve known better, I should’ve not had all my money in one place, etc. but the truth is, it’s done, I can’t do anything about it, so I have to forgive myself. And according to Maggie I need to love myself, so important!And finally I will say that her speaking about relationships is so important. Sometimes when we’re going through a hard time, we withdraw and wont get around other people. That is the worst thing we can do. We need to have social contact with others, that aren’t judging us. We are relational creatures, and made to have healthy loving relationships.I am doing and practicing the exercises that she has put in this book, they are working for me, including meditation.If I could reach out and hug the author, I would do it. This she does by means of both self help and professional help.I especially liked the fact that this book is written from the perspective of both personal experience and professional experience. So the technics shared in here are proven solutions that have helped not only the author but her clients as a medical doctor.A unique guidance that will help you on a day to day basis and offers bonus fast relief when you need it!

I no longer expect much of self-help books but I keep reading them as I seek a better understanding of the human brain. I was very impressed by this book not only because the author suffered the symptoms discussed in the book herself but also because she is a medical doctor, psychiatrist. My favorite part of the book is "Simplified science behind the symptoms" which clearly explains what happens to the brain that suffers anxiety disorders or depression. Another great part of this book is dedicated to an immediate relief from anxiety symptoms. The book itself is well structured, easy to navigate and read.

This quick (but hugely helpful) read is written for people who suffer from anxiety. It can help those with generalized anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks! There are so many great suggestions that are clinically proven to help. I would recommend downloading it on your phone to have handy so you can use it to talk you through some things or at least give you an idea for what to do in the moment where you’re experiencing anxiety.I love that this book is written by a psychiatrist who has also suffered from anxiety! As a medical provider, I will put this in my resource file as an adjunct to therapy for my patients who suffer from anxiety!

Your Journey to Calm is packed full of information and provides you with a step by step guide to dealing with anxiety and panic attacks. Given the author's professional background as a doctor, and her personal background as a sufferer, she garners instant credibility and is uniquely qualified to take us on this journey. As a sufferer over the years of both anxiety and panic attacks, I found it fascinating to read how my brain operates when this happens, and about the internal and external forces at work. The book is well laid out and makes a great reference book for future use.

Great practical and helpful information. I read this to help me to better understand a family member's anxiety. I appreciate that the author is a doctor who has experienced anxiety attacks so she speaks from experience. I found the information very useful and the style of writing clear. Even though she is a doctor, she explains the information in a way that everyone can understand.

I've struggled with anxiety off and on for most of my life. So, I was drawn to this book at first sight. There is lots of helpful information and advice for anyone struggling with anxiety themselves. This is one I'm going to keep in my health library for future reference.

Great timing! So many are dealing with this subject, myself included! Having a doctor's take on things is important too. I found it a great read, simple to understand and consistent with other things I have read. It already inspired me to get up and workout!
