About the Author
Barbara Carroll Roberts is a graduate of Hamline University's Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA program. She played competitive sports in high school and always wished there had been books in her library about athletic girls. That desire - and the realization that there still aren't many books about girls who truly love sports - inspired her to write this book. She's playing out of position and a poor performance has her questioning whether she belongs. On top of that, there is friend drama, her grades are slipping, and her mom might not let her continue playing.Nikki must learn to reinvent herself and rediscover her love for the game of basketball. This book is action-packed and heartfelt, and a great addition to anyone's middle grade library.
Nikki dreams about becoming a basketball star. When she makes a competitive basketball team with her best friend, she has high hopes for the upcoming season. But there are a lot of challenges Nikki has to face. First of all, financing the cost of Nikki playing on the competitive team is a big burden for her single mother. In order to make her dream a reality, Nikki volunteers to babysit her brother after school so that they no longer have to pay for daycare for him. Because she is busy every day after school with her brother, Nikki can't hang out with her best friend and another girl from her new basketball team. There's a school assignment that is causing her stress, the mean remarks she overhead another player's dad make about her, and her floundering grades that have Nikki struggling to keep it all together.I loved this book. I loved Nikki's passion for basketball, her friendships with teammates and watching the friendship develop between her and the new boy in her class. Even though Nikki's mom frustrated me from time to time- her lack of ability to really listen to her daughter and her preoccupation with her job, I still felt like she did really care about her daughter.I'm so excited to share this book with middle grade readers. Nikki On The Line will certainly appeal to basketball lovers, but this is a story for everyone, not just sports fans.
