Review
"Mary Haseltine in Made for This: The Catholic Mom's Guide to Birth unpacks for the reader the illumination Faith brings to the miracle of the birth of a new life. This book is a valuable tool to help mothers experience pregnancy and birth as God intended -- something beautiful, redemptive and supernatural. It is a must read for expectant mothers and fathers, for couples in child-bearing years, and everyone who cares about them." Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, Archbishop of Kansas City and Chairman of the USCCB Pro-Life Committee "Made for This offers solid spiritual direction in addition to the excellent childbirth preparation you are looking for. This book is a unique resource: the author holds a degree in theology, and she is also a childbirth educator and a birth doula. Her book provides a clear roadmap for your journey of faith on your way to welcoming your baby into the world." William Sears, MD and Martha Sears, RN, authors of The Baby Book, The Birth Book, and The Healthy Pregnancy Book"Haseltine has walked a delicate line with masterful precision, bridging the sometimes contentious gap between medicated and unmedicated birth with grace, mercy, and a profound dose of faith-filled wisdom. In a culture which tends to downplay the spiritual and that struggles to acknowledge the beauty of fertility and childbirth, Mary has brought her formidable skills as a mother, a doula, and a careful theological thinker to bear on a profoundly important part of the human experience. As a woman and a mother who has experienced the gamut of hospital births, reading her book brought both joy and healing to memories I had relegated to the very dimmest places in my memory. Stock this title in every Catholic parish and medical practice and put it on your gift list for new moms." Jenny Uebbing, blogger at Mama Needs Coffee, mother of 5"Made for This accomplishes the vitally important task of rebuilding a culture of life by bringing the Church's rich teachings on motherhood and birth into the void left by the breakdown of family life and disruptions to the transmission of intergenerational wisdom. Haseltine's engaging style and expertise as a doula combine to make this a must-read book for expecting parents." Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila, Archbishop of Denver, CO"Mary Haseltine equips every mom--whether pregnant for the first time or expecting her 10th baby--to enter fully the mystery of childbirth. By educating her mind, preparing her body and engaging her soul, this book provides every pregnant woman a crucial roadmap for the journey to motherhood." Edward & Beth Sri - Edward is author of Men, Women & the Mystery of Love, Beth is mother of eight and founder of Borntodothis.org

This book is a must-have! I read SO MANY pregnancy books with my first son 3+ years ago. I read a few more with my daughter. NONE of them are as comprehensive as this! (What to Expect when You're Expecting may be encyclopedic, but it's even missing stuff, and is much dryer, high-intervention, and no Catholic parts.)I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the scripture and Theology of the Body that this book starts off with! It is SO HELPFUL and empowering! Other wonderful topics tackled from a Catholic perspective: supernatural preparation for birth, naming your baby, and appendices with prayers, scripture, and saint quotes. This book covers the obvious, necessary topics--choosing a provider, where to birth, nutrition, breastfeeding--but in a way that encourages low-intervention.This book also covers some very important topics that most pregnancy books barely touch: emotions and wounds before birth, mentally preparing for labor, c-section IN DETAIL, OPTIONS for the newborn (versus "this is just what is going to happen."), and very importantly, pregnancy loss with all its options, rights, and practical details, all from a pro-life perspective. (Other books barely mention this.)This is a great book, especially for those who want a low-intervention birth with a midwife or doula present.
I was excited to start reading this book. As someone who has only had terrible births, I hoped this book would offer me some healing and remind me that birth is about more than just getting a baby out. I was concerned this book might not speak to me, as both my pregnancies ended in c-sections and my 1st I was a single mom. This book not only offers support and encouragement for c-section moms, but also moms giving birth in less than ideal situations. It would be great for a new mom as it goes over all different birth options, but I think it's also great for moms who are still having babies, and for moms who need to process what they've gone though.
I'm so grateful for this book. I'm expecting my first baby anytime now and naturally I had tons of anxiety and fears. Even though I had done my research early in my pregnancy regarding childbirth I learned sooo much with this book! A lot of my fears are gone now and I feel confident that God is in control and that he designed women's bodies for this amazing adventure of childbirth and motherhood.
I wish this had been a resource available to me when I was pregnant with my first. Made for This is an excellent resource for all types of birth and explores the best ways to incorporate Catholic faith throughout the process. There is so much respect in this book that touches on every type of birth including pregnancy loss. Regardless of your birth preferences, this book will be a judgment-free read that lays out options and possibilities.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! As a practicing Catholic who has given birth twice, I felt as if my blinded eyes were being pulled wide open to deep truths of birth that I could not believe I had never heard! I am fairly well read in the fertility & birth world, and this book is absolutely one of a kind. The author beautifully weaves the teachings of the Theology of the Body into every aspect of birth, “to show that birth is an essential part of who God created women to be, body and soul,†and leaves you educated and inspired! As a doula herself, the objective presentation of the educational information wrapped in a Catholic viewpoint and theology of the body perceptive is invaluable! This is seriously my new birth bible, and I already packed it in my hospital bag to have for reference!!! Also, one of my favorite things is the appendices in the back she has compiled of scripture verses and saint quotes specific for labor, birth, endurance, fear etc & litanies for mothers etc, its amazing to have these pre-picked all in one spot!!! I have already recommended this to every one of my expectant friends, thank you for the blessing you have given us in this book!!!
I yearn to be able to go back and relive the births of all five of our children, just so I could absorb this wonderful book with each one! This book was a gift for our daughter, who recently gave birth to her 8th child. She has shared with us how much the author's insights helped her throughout the final weeks of her pregnancy and the entire birth. This beautiful book also helped her husband prepare for being more supportive and prayerful during this birth as well. Best of all, our daughter's OB and nurse are thrilled that this much needed book is available for their patients and any mother who wants to understand and embrace birth from a more spiritual perspective. Our daughter has enthusiastically recommended it to several women she knows who are expecting and has requested that her local library purchase the book, in the hope that it would be available to even more expectant mothers. We're so thankful that Mary Haseltine has woven her experiences as a doula, a mother and a wife, and as a Catholic into such a wonderful resource for those who wish to focus on the beauty, spirituality and grace of birth.
This excellent guide both introduces and explains how to approach birth from a place of prayer, information, and confidence. Haseltine gives a thorough overview including both high intervention and natural options, and though she does lean strongly towards less intervention, she makes it clear that that is a preference rather than a moral imperative. The delivery (of my 4th child) after reading this book was the most peaceful and prayerful I have experienced. I highly recommend it as a starting point for any pregnant woman and it may be all you need!
